The Shelby County Information Technology department runs a state of the art network of computers, systems and databases to advance the delivery of services to citizens and employees in a responsive, reliable, secure and cost effective manner. The department developed and maintains the County's web portal on the Internet, and extranet "highway" for local government organizations to communicate and exchange data, and custom applications such as those for Shelby County's criminal justice system and motor vehicle registration. Information technology is a catalyst to re-engineer current practices and design better ways of conducting the business of government.

Information Technology's staff of 97 people keeps the computers busy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and responds to calls for training, program design and trouble-shooting. The department responds to an average of 2,600 requests for service and more than 9,000 trouble calls annually.
