Risk Management oversees On-the-Job Injuries (OJIs) and safety for Shelby County Government. When an employee files a claim that he or she has been injured while working, an OJI specialist schedules the employee to be seen by a physician from the county's panel.  If the doctor determines that the injury was caused by the job, a course of treatment is developed, and the appropriate OJI specialist works with injured employees throughout treatment and rehabilitation.  The manager also enters information into a computerized risk management system. Payments to health providers are approved by the department.  Throughout each year OJI specialists train all levels of county management and employees on the county's policy, as well as specific health concerns such as exposure to communicable diseases.

The safety specialist annually inspects 150 facilities, including all governmental buildings and Shelby County Schools.  If hazards or potential hazards are found, the specialist notifies elected officials and building managers of the need that a hazardous condition be made safe.  The specialist then follows up on each of those situations to check to see if the problem has been eliminated.  The specialist also trains employees throughout the year on regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, on the use of protective equipment, and on First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
