Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Responds
To First Probable Case of Swine Flu

Memphis, TN. -  Late this evening, the Tennessee Department of Health has identified the first probable case of the novel H1N1 virus in the state. The specimen will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to confirm preliminary results.

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department is continuing its efforts to respond to this public health emergency.

"We are remaining vigilant and consistent with our earlier approaches of increased surveillance in order to detect human cases of swine flu," said Mayor A.C. Wharton.

As a reminder, citizens should continue to practice good hygiene by washing their hands with warm, soapy water; coughing or sneezing in their sleeve or a tissue; and staying home if they feel ill. These steps will help slow the spread of the illness.

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department will continue to update citizens via its recorded information line: 544-6969.
