Functions

The chief administrative officer (CAO) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the county's government. These functions consist of various services to the citizens of Shelby County including:
  • Approving and monitoring strategic initiatives for divisions reporting to the county mayor
  • Ensuring effective and efficient delivery of county services to its citizens
  • Ensuring financial transactions are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies
  • Monitoring the management and funding for the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (MED), our regional safety-net hospital
  • Overseeing the preparation and approval of the county's operating and capital budgets
  • Providing financial oversight and direction to maintain the county’s financial stability
  • Reviewing funding to initiatives to the City of Memphis and Shelby County Schools to ensure statutory compliance
