Notice of Order Continuing Suspension of

In-Person Court Proceedings until April 30, 2020

 and Extension of Deadlines

The Court provides the following guidance for common situations: 


During this period, Motions must be specially set with Division Clerk*. Rule 5(h) is more important than ever and strict compliance is required. 

Uncontested Divorces:

All Uncontested Divorces are suspended during the time period prescribed by the Order of the Tennessee Supreme Court. 


Consent Orders may be submitted electronically via individual division email* or physically in Room 208 if in compliance with Rule 58 of the Tennessee Rules of Civil Procedure. 

All other orders, including competing orders, may be submitted for the Courts review in the same manner as consent orders.

DIVISION Specific notes:

Division 3: Cases set for dismissal on March 26 are rescheduled for June 23, 2020.

Division 8: Cases set for dismissal on March 23 are rescheduled for June 10, 2020.


The Shelby County Circuit Court Clerk's Office is actively monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) and are coordinating with City, County, State, and Federal agencies.

Due to Court not being in session multiple Fridays in April,
Motions will be heard on Thursday, April 9th at 9:00 a.m.
in all nine Divisions of Circuit Court.

Organization and Responsibilities:

Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction consisting of nine judges presiding over nine divisions. The court hears a variety of civil cases, including:

  • Appeals from lower courts
  • Auto accident
  • Breach of Contract
  • Condemnation
  • Divorce
  • Medical malpractice
  • Minor settlement
  • Name Change
  • Personal injury
  • Worker's compensation
  • Wrongful death

  Approximately 5,500 cases are filed in Circuit Court annually.

February 17, 2020 - Presidents Day (Courts will be closed, Clerk offices will be open)
