  1. Commissioner Willie F. Brooks, Jr. was elected to the Shelby County Board of Commissioners August 7, 2014 to represent the newly formed District 6 which includes Frayser, Raleigh, and parts of North Memphis.

    He is a Human Resources Program Management Advisor and administers corporate compensation programs for U.S. Operations at FedEx. In 2002, Commissioner Brooks received the FedEx Five Star Award, which is the most prestigious award FedEx Express bestows to employees. Commissioner Brooks was elected in 2006 to the Memphis Charter Commission and in 2003, to the Memphis City School Board of Commissioners. In July 2004, he received the honor of Broad Fellow from the Broad Institute for School Boards.

    Commissioner Brooks is very active in his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. and has served in various leadership roles. In 1997 and 2004, he received the Kappa Man of the Year Award. In 2007, he was appointed the 21st Province Polemarch (Regional President) of the South Central Province. Commissioner Brooks served on the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Multicultural African-American Advisory Committee and served as the National Chairman for St. Jude Partnership Initiatives.

    He is a 1986 graduate of Leadership Memphis, Board Chairman Star Academy Charter School, and Board Chairman Memphis Cares Mentoring Movement. The Memphis Tri-State Defender named him one of “50 Men of Excellence” and the Silver Star News magazine recognized him as a positive role model contributing to the general welfare of the Greater Memphis area.

    Commissioner Brooks has served as a one-on-one mentor in the Memphis City Schools CONNECT Mentoring Program. He has also been the impetus to involve others at FedEx in mentoring. Commissioner Brooks has lead the group to “adopt” four other mentoring organizations throughout Memphis by recruiting volunteers from within FedEx to become mentors for these organizations. Since 2009, more than 200 FedEx employees have signed up as mentors for these organizations.

    Commissioner Brooks is a Deacon and past Chairman of the Men’s Ministry at Temple of Deliverance of Church of God In Christ (COGIC). He is married to wife, Dianne, and has two children, Kemmashela and Willie, III.
