At the beginning of Mayor Lee Harris' Administration, community leaders put forth a recommendation that Shelby County Government create a liaison for collaboration between our seven school districts. Mayor Harris took this recommendation further by forming the Office of Education (OOE) and appointing Dr. Cedrick Gray as director.
With the support of Mayor Harris, Director Gray has led several successful initiatives including the Mayor Lee Harris Summer Work Experience, the Vo-Tech Scholars Program, and the Virtual Learning Academy. The OOE has evolved beyond its original role as a liaison for education policy. By collaborating with departments, coordinating with city governments, and supporting education champions, the OOE has prioritized learning for all.
At the heart, the OOE works to show young people that Shelby County is a home where they have a prosperous future. From pre-K to graduation and beyond, scholars of all ages deserve meaningful experiences learning what books haven’t yet taught them. The growth of this office is proof of what is possible when vision and opportunity meet action.
