Aging My Way 

The Older Americans Act (OAA) of 1965 was the first federal funding dedicated to creating services for older Americans. The Act created a system for provision of services such as nutrition programs, in home services, transportation, legal services, elder abuse prevention, caregiver supports, case management, senior centers, information and referral services, health promotion and disease prevention, and long term care ombudsman. Additional items funded by OAA include training, research, and senior community and employment services employment programs.

OAA established the Area Agencies on Aging and Disability (AAADs) to coordinate and offer services to help older persons remain in their home and make independent living an option for them. The Aging Commission of the Mid-South (ACMS) is 1 of the 622 AAADs in the US. We proudly assist seniors and persons with disabilities in Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby, and Tipton counties. As May is recognized as Older Americans Month, we take this opportunity to celebrate seniors who are “Aging My Way," our community partners providing services, the staff of ACMS and employees throughout Shelby County Government who make it possible for seniors to remain independent and contribute to their communities.
