SHELBY COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND CITY OF MEMPHIS HOST

CEREMONY TO HONOR VETERANS

Shelby County, TN – Today, Shelby County Government and the City of Memphis will honor veterans across the Mid-South for Veterans Day with a military appreciation program at the Malco Summer Drive-in Theater. WMC Action News 5 anchor Joe Birch will moderate a pre-recorded tribute to military veterans. The program will include remarks from Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, City of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, and a keynote from retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Deborah Womack. Veterans will be celebrated with a service branch recognition and a dance tribute by Ballet Memphis.

The program kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Malco Summer Drive-in Theater. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Viewers are encouraged to tune in to the City of Memphis’ Library Channel, WYPL TV 18, and 1092 at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on November 11, or they can view online at https://www.shelbycountytn.gov/VeteransDayProgram2020.

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris: “Shelby County remains committed to supporting veterans and their families in every way possible. With over 52,000 veterans, our county has the largest veterans’ population in the state of Tennessee. I am proud that we have a Veterans Services Office where service officers stand ready to serve these heroes veterans every day. It is our duty and certainly our honor to serve and celebrate those who served us. Today’s presentation is another way to show our appreciation for their sacrifices.”

City of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland: “While this year’s event may be a little different, the significance of why we do it—to say thank you—is as important as ever. I hope our veterans will take today as a small token of our appreciation for their service to our nation. Know how much my family and I, as well as the 650,000 residents of Memphis, appreciate you and the sacrifices you’ve made to allow us the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
